Packing and delivering 📦
July 24, 2024Day 98, part 2
After taking a shower, time to collect all my packages. I had a few at the hotel and a few more to collect at the post office 🏤. I got all these packages because I have an ambitious plan for all the remaining resupplies!
On day 90, at the post office in Old Station, I met Diesel and Red Lentils and I was amused by their resupply strategy: they had a gigantic box with basically all the food they will need for the whole PCT. They send this box to themselves from time to time and when they receive it (like now), they prepare the 2-3 next resupply boxes and send this big box further away and when they reach there, they repeat the process. By doing that, they “do groceries” much quicker and easier and still give them a lot of flexibility.
So that’s what I’m doing here today! I bought 30+ dinner packs, 200+ energy bars and absurd amounts of electrolytes, wet wipes and other amenities and made myself three boxes: two resupply boxes for Oregon and one box with everything else that I sent to the last town in Oregon, 400+ miles away: Cascade Locks. “Everything else” includes my mattress, fleece, puff jacket, extra sock, old shoes (that might be useful still) and, notably, my stove and cooking pot!
In order to reduce time spent with anything other than hiking and to make things simpler, I’ll hike through Oregon stoveless. That means I will cold soak 🫙 my food instead of cooking them. Other than (cold) dinner, all my other meals will be composed by bars or other foods that I can eat while walking! I sent ahead my warm clothes, sleeping mattress and now my warm food… I feel that I’m little by little removing all the pleasures from my life 😂!
Before closing the boxes, I went to the supermarket to buy more bars and nuts to put in them. The post office closed at 5pm and I was there at 4:50pm! Mission accomplished ✅!
